SYMBIOSIS: Plover serves as crocodile’s ‘dentist’

“Perhaps the most remarkable example of co-existence, is that of the plover and the Nile crocodile,” is how The Reader’s Digest Book of Strange Stories, Amazing Facts described the symbiosis between this bird and reptile.

The plover is a short-tailed with a bill like that of a pigeon.

Amazingly, this mild-looking bird plays the “dentist” to this ferocious reptile.

The book stated: “The crocodile is renowned as a voracious reptile that will snap at anything that comes within range of its powerful jaws. Yet the plover can enter that gaping mouth and act as a ‘dentist’ – cleaning the scraps of decaying food from between the crocodile’s teeth.”
